If you had asked me a few years back what I do, I’d have told you I’m a full time artist. Now, I’d say I’m a full time website designer and marketing consultant, and that I paint on the side. That change in focus was not deliberate, but rather the gradual outcome of my intention to learn how to utilize the Internet for marketing my art.
Once I dove into Internet marketing, I found myself following many paths – some that turned into dead ends, and some that led to nice income streams – but all were interesting and taught me something valuable. It has been my goal all along to share what I’ve learned with artists, so throughout it all I held a question in the back of my mind: “will this help artists?”. It has only been in the past year or two that I’ve begun to think that maybe it was time to follow through on that intention to serve as a resource for artists.
The final nudge came last spring I attended an art marketing workshop and realized that I could have taught it. Yet, the artists around me were overwhelmed by how much there was to learn. I knew then that it was time to start putting my stuff together and getting it out there. This blog is a final step toward making myself and my services visible, yet only the first step in putting together information that can truly help artists market more wisely and effectively.
My partner Susan and I are looking forward to reading your comments about what is posted here. Your input will guide the development of training materials for artists who want to take a more focused role in marketing their work. We hope to hear from you soon!
